Interlock is an electronic breath testing device connected to the ignition of a vehicle which prevents the vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected. The device also includes a camera to record a photograph of the person giving the breath sample.
From 3 December 2018, the NSW government has extended the reach of interlock laws to make it compulsory for anyone convicted of a mid-range prescribed concentration of alcohol offence (PCA) to fit an interlock device to any vehicle that person drives once their period of disqualification has ended. Previously, this requirement only applied to people with high-range PCA offences or those convicted of a second major offence within 5 years.
